Replika Remembers You — Up to the Point Romance Starts

Replika has always sold one thing: a companion who remembers you, with one persistent avatar and one ongoing thread. For adults the catch arrives quickly. Newer Replika accounts hit restrictions as soon as the conversation turns romantic.

Fair point first: nobody has been doing this longer. Replika comes from Luka, Inc. in San Francisco and is the longest-running AI companion brand. It still handles the basics well. Your companion keeps one identity and carries memory between sessions, and she wears whatever look you build in the avatar customizer. AR mode puts her in your room through the phone camera, which is a neat trick. If the test is continuity in text, Replika passes.

So where does it fall short? Romantic and ERP modes are restricted for newer accounts. Accounts from before 2023 are grandfathered, which is great if you kept yours and useless if you're signing up tonight. Voice calls also sit behind the paid tiers, so the free version is mostly text with an avatar attached.

Here's the short version. Replika remembers you, but a new account can't follow you where an adult relationship usually goes. If you want it to go further, GoLove.ai is my pick, and the specific feature that decides it is this: the same character keeps her face across every photo you ask for in chat.

What Happens When You Ask Her for a Photo Mid-Conversation

This step is what separates a chat app from a companion app. You open a character from GoLove's Explore page, and before typing anything you go into Chat Settings. Lust level is a 1–5 slider that runs from sweet to unfiltered. Response length is another 1–5 slider, from snappy to immersive. Two sliders, no notes.

A few messages in, tap the media button, pick Send Photo and describe the scene in your own words. A photo of her arrives in roughly 20–45 seconds and costs 1 Star. It's the same face and body as her avatar and her earlier photos, not a lookalike (and in this category, that consistency is the whole game). Under the photo there's a one-tap Generate Video, which turns the scene into a ~5-second clip in about a minute for 10 Stars.

The chat around the photos carries its share too:

• Memory of your history, so tomorrow picks up where tonight stopped
• Voice playback on every message she sends
• Reply suggestions: the magic-wand button writes three for you
• Rating replies 1–5 and regenerating the ones that miss

You don't need an account to see whether this works for you. Logged out, the first photo in a chat is visible and the next one is blurred behind a Sign Up lock. Pick a character, read her opening lines, and you'll know within two minutes whether she's worth signing up for.

Is Chai AI a better Replika replacement for adult chat? We can't give you a straight yes or no, and if someone else does, ask where they got it. It comes down to two questions. The first is continuity: does the companion keep memory, a consistent face and a voice from one session to the next? The second is access: is romance open on a brand-new account, or gated the way Replika's is for newer users? Look both up on Chai's own pages today. Don't take either on faith, including from a marketing banner.

A companion that only exists as text is a pen pal; continuity is what turns it into someone.

I'm using that as the yardstick for the rest of this piece. The screenshot below is a long GoLove desktop thread, and it shows what continuity looks like. The conversation keeps going, photos drop in between messages, and the woman in the fifth picture is clearly the one from the first.

The Scorecard: Where Replika Wins and Where It Stops

Line the three apps up and Replika's strengths and its limits both show quickly.

Replika takes yearly value and the AR trick, and it earns both. GoLove takes everything where the adult relationship needs more than words: romance on a fresh account, photos on request and a story you can step into. The Chai column stays blank on purpose. I'd rather print "Not confirmed" than guess.

In dollars, the trade-off looks like this. Replika's annual Pro costs noticeably less than GoLove PRO's yearly plan; Replika shows its prices only inside the app and they vary by region and promo, so check there. That gap is real, and the subscription isn't the whole bill.

If you mostly text, Replika's year is a hard sell to beat on price. If you want her in pictures, and the same her every time, PRO's 100 monthly Stars cover 100 photos. We couldn't confirm that Replika offers that part at all.

Start With an Episode, Then Message Its Star

Spec sheets are a poor way to spend an evening. Open GoLove's Series tab and start "My AI Girlfriend", a 7-episode series starring Lexie (@iamlexiebabe). Episodes 1 and 2 are free, even without an account, and each runs 60–100 seconds as a vertical video with subtitles in nine languages. When episode 2 ends, tap Start Chatting under the player. Now you're in a private chat with the woman you just watched, and she remembers you when you come back. That move from watching a show to texting its lead is legit good. From episode 3 on you need PRO plus a few Stars per episode, and GoLove says new episodes arrive every week.

Before that first message, set up:

• Lust level: 1 for sweet, 5 for unfiltered
• Response length: quick replies or long, immersive ones
• The voice picker in Chat Settings
• Your first photo request, written in your own words

Which one should you pick? Go with Replika if you want the cheapest annual companion with an AR avatar, especially if you still have a pre-2023 account. Go with GoLove.ai if you want romance that carries on into photos, video and a story whose star answers your messages.
